Kanpai Japanese Steak & Seafood House: Reviews & Ratings
Always a wonderful time! The best Japanese restaurant in the Triad! Chefs are funny and personable; wait staff is friendly and courteous; bar staff prepares great cocktails!
I called to try to make a reservation and they said they only take walk ins at that time , we get there and they asked if we had a reservation, so I was kinda annoyed by that , overall the wait was roughly around 30/40 minutes (it was very busy ) . While we were waiting the door would blow open (it was cold and raining ) and everyone in the waiting area would freeze . Once we were sat we still felt the freezing air (everyone at our table was complaining about how cold it was ) Besides that the only thing else I can say is that the portion of chicken the chef gave my husband ( chicken was split into 3 servings ) was very small compared to mine and the other gentleman at our table (I provided a picture so you could see the comparison) the ranch for my salad was not good , it wasn’t homemade ranch it , tasted like hidden valley but everything else was delicious, the steak was super tender and cooked exactly how I wanted (medium rare ) , the sauces provided were also very yummy and paired great with everything we ordered . Overall the experience was nice , the chef wasn’t very entertaining but we honestly didn’t mind bc we just wanted to eat . For my husband and I our two meals and two drinks we paid 67$ not including tip . We have SO MUCH leftovers so it’s definitely worth the money and experience. Will be returning .
My favorite Japanese in town! Their scallops are huge and always perfectly cooked. Their red snapper is huge and crispy buttery. I prefer their house dressing over all the other similar restaurants. Sometimes there is a wait, but our family is also in the restaurant business and, (especially since covid), it seems that people don't want to work! So, sometimes restaurants are short-handed, and I love to extend courtesy and patience to people who are trying to make a living and at the mercy of the help deciding to show up! Be kind to people who are willing to work.!
Visited this restaurant with a party of 12. A few too many for one side of the table so our party was separated, but we worked it out. We had a reservation for 5:30 pm on a Sat night and we were all there on time. We did wait probably 15 min to get a table, but not much longer than expected at a hibachi style restaurant. This place was packed! I am glad we had a reservation! Service was good and waitress was attentive. Food was good, but we were there for a kids birthday and our chef was kind of a dud. The chef on the other aide (cooking for the rest of our party...no kids) was much more fun and into it. He even helped play into the kids behind him who he wasn't even cooking for. We made it through just fine and food was great. They do have some daily specials and combos as well as giving the option of a smaller portion meal at a lower price point. All on all it was worth the shortish drive to Winston to visit.
Kanpai is a very popular restaurant in Winston Salem. Prepare for a wait on the weekend. We made a reservation for 7 on a Saturday night and still ended up waiting quite a bit, but the service is great and the entire family loves eating here. Plus, we always come away with leftovers! Saturday is busy, therefore very loud, so be prepared for that as well. Each table seats eight. It's fun to talk with the random people seated at your table and the chef is usually very engaging. We've been coming here for roughly 20 years and it remains a favorite.
Came in without a reservation and didn't have to wait. Got to share a table with a small family and it was perfectly fine because it's a large area. Speaking of large the portions wow. The waitress was sweet and on top of things, the chef was friendly and the food was soooo good. Will be coming back despite how much I hate city driving lol
I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect at first glance, but I was genuinely blown away by this place. The service was warm and welcoming from the moment we walked in, and the staff went above and beyond to make our experience special. I’m on a very restrictive medical diet and was worried about dining out, but I came here with my son to celebrate his birthday. Not only were they incredibly accommodating with my dietary needs, but they also did it with such kindness and attentiveness that I never once felt like an inconvenience. The food was flavorful and beautifully prepared—every dish we tried was fresh and delicious. My son thoroughly enjoyed his meal, and I was truly grateful to find options that worked for me without compromising taste or experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking for authentic flavor, genuine hospitality, and thoughtful service. We’ll definitely be back!

Welcome to Kanpai Japanese Steak & Seafood House, an esteemed culinary destination located at 1438 S Stratford Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. As a food reviewer, I've had the pleasure of exploring various dining establishments, and Kanpai stands out as a delightful experience for lovers of Japanese cuisine.
Upon entering Kanpai, you are greeted with the warm, inviting aroma of sizzling steak and fresh seafood. This establishment has earned its reputation as one of the best Japanese restaurants in the Triad area, with many patrons like Nancy Smalley praising the personable chefs and friendly wait staff who are dedicated to enhancing your dining experience.
One of the highlights of Kanpai is the hibachi grill experience, where talented chefs not only cook with precision but also entertain with their culinary flair. It's not just a meal; it's an interactive event that transforms dinner into an experience. Pam Hondros raves about the restaurant's perfectly cooked scallops and crispy red snapper, pointing out the house dressing as a must-try that leaves a lasting impression.
However, it’s essential to be prepared for potential waits, especially on weekends. Many guests, like Stephanie, note the popularity of Kanpai, with reservations often leading to a brief wait. While some have experienced issues with service speed due to staffing shortages, the overall atmosphere and vibrant energy of the restaurant make it worth the wait. The communal dining format fosters a sense of camaraderie, where conversations flow easily among the unfamiliar faces at your table.
In terms of the food, it's not just about flavor; it's about portion size and value as well. A significant portion of diners have found the meals satisfying. Melisa Nicole appreciated the rich and tender steak cooked to perfection, while also mentioning that the sauces complemented the dishes brilliantly. Whether dining solo or with a large party—like Steve Witek's party of twelve—Kanpai accommodates various group sizes, making it a versatile option for any occasion.
With a fine selection of daily specials and combo offerings, Kanpai ensures that there's something for everyone, no matter your palate. I personally recommend trying their signature dishes, as they provide a perfect introduction to the robust flavors of Japanese cuisine while promising great value for your meal.
So, if you're seeking a lively dining experience filled with laughter, great food, and a touch of artistry, make your way to Kanpai Japanese Steak & Seafood House. Remember to embrace the atmosphere and enjoy the delightful offerings that have kept patrons coming back for over 20 years.
